Bears, bears, bears, bears

Cozy pajama day!
We zoomed in on bears this week as we learned about hibernation. We read about Black Bears, Grizzly Bears, Panda, Polar, and Sun bears. Using poems, non-fiction texts, photos, and posters, we explored the similarities and differences between bears. Which one is the largest or smallest, who eats only bamboo? Why is the Sun Bear also called a Honey Bear? Lots to love about all these bears! We also read a few fictional books about bears since they are often a favorite character in children's books.Writing about bears was a natural extension of learning, so everyone completed a bear shaped book telling what all bears have in common and then some facts on their favorite bear.

This takes place in Boston!
Other writing activities this week included writing about a small moment and including a good opening and a wrap up sentence. We read Rollercoaster as inspiration since the character wrote many details about one amusement park ride (a small moment), rather than telling about the entire day.

We also had loads of fun writing an experience about a time we got hurt - there is always a story behind those experiences, and everyone loves sharing them. The most fun was putting a band aid on the illustration part and turning into a person!

Did I tell you about the time...?
Wait 'til you hear this story!

Everyone loves partner work and they especially love taking turns playing the part of the teacher. Here we are practicing skills with each other:

My turn first!

We are aces!
We are quite at home together!

  In centers this week, we
read a Starfall story with words ending in Y that sound
like e or i (family, by, sky...) .
We highlighted sight words
in our bear poem in poetry,
made words with cut-out bears
in ABC center, and sorted letter sounds at pocket chart.

Listening to a bear story of course
Poetry fun
We had a STRIPES assembly on Friday focusing on Teamwork, and our class was represented by Ayla as she took part in the team work activity! Library day was Wednesday. If your book got left at home, send it in any time so we will be ready for the next library visit (the week after next).

Report cards were sent home on Friday. Thanks for signing up for parent conferences, and I look forward to seeing you on Wednesday.

Have a wonderful weekend,
Mrs. Dagley
