We are first graders now!

Painting!
We did it! The first three days are behind us and everyone pitched in to make it a great week. The kids are making friends quickly with their new classmates, learning routines, and having fun. Here they are displaying their water color paintings of the globe showing North and South America. Our library area has a rain forest theme and this globe shows its location in relation to ours.
Using paints was fun!
Such careful painting!
Even did their own clean up!

All the rainforest pictures and books!

Everyone loved exploring our class library and it was the perfect chance to enjoy a book with a buddy...
Look at that!
Quite comfy!
These little chairs are just right!
A good read!

I guess 3 can fit here!

Buddy reading!

Reading nook!
I like fact books!

A few of the read-alouds we read this week were Corduroy,
Very interesting book!
The Loose Tooth, and Lunch Bunnies. Alivia conveniently lost a tooth this week which went along with our story and gave us a chance to sing the tooth song to her. After reading Lunch Bunnies, about a bunny who was nervous about the lunch line and balancing a tray, we all shared a few of our own worries about starting school. Hopefully those are behind us now!

The heat this week meant we had indoor recess for 2 of the days, but that gave an opportunity to explore the indoor recess toys and play with friends.
Legos!

Dolls and Scooby Doo characters
Building a castle!
Blocks and Dinos

Restaurant time

More lego times

Hot Wheels
Build that track!
In math this week we began with addition. After a whole group lesson, we rotate through 3 math centers. One center completes the EnVision's Booklet with me, the 2nd completes an independent page at their desk, and the 3rd is the hands-on game group. They have this down pat!

Snack time is a favorite time of day and those lunch boxes are loaded with yummy choices!

What's in your lunch bag?!
I love snack!

As you may have seen on the school website, we had a fire drill this week and we also watched the A.L.I.C.E. video by Officer Manning on what to do in case of an emergency. You may want to discuss this at home as well.

We practiced a little independent reading time as well with books chosen for each child's reading level. They can be very proud of their efforts!
Nice reading!

Great focus!
We all found a just right book!

It's been a busy week, but the kids enthusiastically entered into each activity. We tried a bit of writing, drew a self portrait with our new supplies, sang songs for the words of the week, and especially loved the science introduction to Sound Energy. Learning about sound waves and vibration and watching the online science videos was engaging. This was also the first week of specialists. The kids went to Music, Phys. Ed. (every Wednesday - wear sneakers), and Art. Next week they will have Computer/Science & Technology for the first time.

I wish to thank everyone for all the generous supplies that were donated. It makes a big difference!

I hope you all have a wonderful holiday weekend, and I look forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday!
